In the last few weeks, Thai prices have come down to THB 110 (€2.69/$3.56) to THB 115 (€2.81/$3.73), from THB 150 (€3.67/$4.86), he told IntraFish. This is for 60 count size shrimp.
For buyers, these prices compare well to prices from Ecuador, the second largest exporter to Thailand.
The Ecuadorian companies were offering cheap prices at the start of the year, particularly in Spain, said the Thai source.
For 60-count head on shrimp, Ecuador was at $5 (€3.77) per kilogram, he said. Prices are going up $0.10 (€0.08) every week and are now at $6.3 (€4.75), he said.
“This is good for me, as demand is coming back for the Thai product.”
However, the source said the prices to the Thai farmers are likely to rise. The cause for the drop is the lack of cold storage space in Thailand. When the packers work through their stocks, demand will pick up again and prices will rise, he said.
