Last year, giant freshwater prawn in the district was farmed by 131 households in a total area of 701ha, accounting for 41.6% of the province’s total farming area.
This year, there were 128 households with a combined area of 808 ha in the flood season. It is expected the district will have 3,000ha for farming giant freshwater prawn in the flood season by 2015.
So far, 500 MT of giant freshwater prawn has been harvest. Locally produced shrimp is sold at VND135,000-265,000/kilo to processors in the Mekong delta and in Cambodia.
Many farmers in Tam Nong said despite high investment and management costs, they could still earn high profits thanks to abundant supply of low cost shrimp feed. Average farmers can earn an extra VND15-24 million/1MT in comparison with last year.
