Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Hoang Trung Hai had a meeting with high ranking officials from Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) and Government’s Office on October 29, 2011.

It is essential to restructure the agriculture sector, said Hai in the meeting aimed to review the development plan for 2011-2012, and adjustment plan for the agriculture sector in 2011-2015.

MARD should develop and submit policies encouraging the application of advanced technologies, investment iagro, forestry and fisheries processing, and regulated husbandry in the mountainous regions.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr. Cao Duc Phat said the sector restructuring effort will focus on aquaculture, especially Pangasius, shrimp and mollusk.

“We aim to develop agriculture and rural area in a sustainable manner, socially, economically and environmentally. The growth rate is set at 2.6-3%/year and the number of poor families will be reduced by 20% within the next decade,” said Mr. Phat.

Mr. Hai requested MARD to take a look at all investment projects and attach more importance to that of the aquaculture sector. He also asked for solutions to stimulate investments from private sectors to develop the aquaculture industry.
